Krabi province is visited by local and foreign tourists all year round for its towering limestone cliffs and secluded beaches. Its geography and rough terrain make it an ideal place for those who want something different. Sea kayakers have spoken about its numerous coves. Others say this is one place where the waters of the Andaman Sea remain calm all the time. The Tham Phra Nang Beach on the southwestern part of the province is where climbers set up camp before proceeding to the cliffs, some of which are said to be at least 1,000 feet high. There are also several huge rock formations that are worth exploring. On the northern side are long stretches of deserted beaches that are more accessible by road, But the best way to see its coast is to hire a long-tail boat. Further inland are caves where Buddhist shrines have been built, like the Wat Tham Sua. History indicates that man first settled in Krabi in 2500 BC. In some caves, archeologists have unearthed skeletal remains of humans, beads and pottery. Colored drawings have also been discovered on some cliffs. Records show that Krabi was a part of the Kingdom of Ligor, a city on east coast that is now known as Nakhon Si Thammarat. At the start of the Rattanakosin period about 200 years ago when Bangkok became the capital, an elephant settlement was established in Krabi as ordered by Chao Phraya Nakorn (Noi), the governor then of Nakhon Si Thammarat. Then in 1872, King Chulalongkorn decreed Krabi to be a town. Krabi's forests have remained pristine. A river crosses through the main town and pours out into the Andaman. Krabi has two pronounced seasons. From January to April, it's generally sunny and dry, the perfect weather for cliff climbing and beachcombing. The rainy season from May to December sees the arrival of monsoon winds, the type of weather that's ideal for sailing and other watersports. The coral reefs are pristine and home to thousands of exotic fish. Floating over the clear waters you will feel like you are flying through a world of three dimensional colors. You can swim through fantastically colored schools of tiger and parrot fish. Watch whole rocks explode in color as sea urchins blink out their many patterns. If you are lucky you may sea the friendly leopard sharks.
