| Taking the ferry |

There are basically two ways to reach or leave Samui, which are flying and by ferry. There are two major ferry operators that operates regular daily ferries. Seatran and Raja ferries provide fairly proficient service and a good standard of ferry boats that leaves port on a reliable timetable. To take ferries to Koh Samui, you would need to travel to the piers of the two operators at Don Sak, which are nearby each other. Don Sak is about 30k from the city of Surat Thani. There are regular van and bus services to and from the pier but advance transport booking would be wise. Ferry tickets, however, cannot be purchased in advance but must be done at the pier. There are several ferry crossing to and from Samui each day. The trip takes approximately one and a half hour. With the exception of a storm or unusually strong winds, the Gulf of Thailand is very calm most of the year. On board the ferry, there are air-conditioned rooms or you can choose to sit out on the open deck. There are small convenient stores that sells hot and cold drinks and simple snacks. On the Seatran ferry, there are also Thai massage services to help you pass the time. As a traveler, traveling by ferry gives you to opportunity to see more of Thailand that perhaps you will not by flying. Local Thais take the ferry as well as Samui and Surat Thani city have regular business transactions. So you will see school children and professionals take the ferry. Furthermore, the Thai seas are beautiful and relaxing. Also the ferry costs are much cheaper than flight.
