PEARLS OF THE SOUTH

Thailand is one of the countries where high quality jewelry and gems like gold, emerald, diamond, sapphire, and pearl are produced. But not many visitors know that about four kilometers south of Koh Samui is a small island called Koh Matsum, where pearls are and cultured at the Naga Pearl Farm.

Pearls must be situated in an environment where water conditions are suitable, very clean, with the right salinity and temperature, and with plenty of plankton that oysters feed on. Furthermore, it must be protected from storm and thieves, and must be near to natural oyster supply. At the Naga Pearl farm these conditions are met.

Two kinds of pearls are cultured at Naga Pearl Farm: The south sea pearls from pinctada maxima oysters, also called Mother of Pearl Oysters. The other is Mabe Pearls, or the half pearl, which are produced out of the Wing Oysters (Pteria Penguine). The south sea pearls are large, beautiful and expensive. Normal sizes range from 10 to 16 millimeters. There are various shapes as round, drop, baroque, and of various colors.

At Naga Pearl Farm, you can see how the lives of pearls are perfected. Demonstration covers pearl farming, operating nucleus into mother of pearl oysters and harvesting.

Many special pearls were already produced from Naga Pearl Farms. One such kind is an 18.2 mm. perfect round and pinkish pearl. It was produced in 1987. It is on display at the Mikimoto Pearl Museum in Japan.

Visit the Naga Pearl Farm and discover how pearls are cultured. A 30-minute boat ride from Ban Thong landing will bring you to Koh Matsum and the Naga Pearl Farm. After you learn about pearl culture, you will enjoy eating Thai food lunch, and spend the afternoon on the white sandy beach.
