The Big Buddha E-mail

A religious and popular tourist attraction all in one, the Big Buddha is a historical relic that conveys faith in Buddha by the people of Samui Island that has become a "must see" by visitors.

Big Buddha or Phra Yai (that has the same literal meaning) is the most impressive structure of Phra Yai Temple on the northern coast of Samui. The Buddha image was constructed in 1972 to inspire those who arrives or leaves the island of Buddha's teachings as the image could be seen several kilometers out.  Since then, it has become one of the most seen image of Samui island.

The huge buddha image is 15 meters high and sits atop a mount that overlooks the northern bay.  Visitors have to walk a series of steps to reach the buddha.

The temple itself is easy to reach and Big Buddha not far from the entrance as the temple itself is relatively small.  There are no fees to view Big Buddha.

This image can be seen from the descending plane

Perhaps many of you noticed that this image is most astounding when viewed from your descending plane. It is the only man-made structure that will catch your attention in anticipation of a landing on the island.

Don't miss this out, and if you did, next time you board the plane, don't be naive.
